RNLI Dun Laoghaire Lifeboat Station
A big thank you to the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company for hosting the RNLI with our CEO Paul Bossier plus representatives from our station as well as Howth, Wicklow, Wexford and Holyhead to mark the 200th anniversary of the harbour.
Refreshing Casualty Care techniques for our crew over two nights this week at the lifeboat station. This is the PS1 type folding stretcher carried on our Inshore lifeboat and is one of five types in use between our two boats.
Two people cut-off by the rising tide at Sandymount were rescued by the RNLI Inshore lifeboat from Dun Laoghaire this evening. The alarm was raised at 4.30pm when the two people found themselves surrounded by water with two more hours of incoming water and nightfall due. The Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard unit spotted the pair from the road and directed the RNLI ILB that launched at 4.45pm and was on scene ten minutes later. However, the depth of water was insufficient to permit the boat to reach the casualties and a crew-member walked the remaining distance to reach the two people who were standing on a sandbank. They were then brought to the safety of the lifeboat before a decision was made to land them at the Pigeon House Road beach at Ringsend. The pair were unharmed apart from wet clothes and they were then looked after by the Coast Guard personnel ashore. The operation took just over 90 minutes from start to finish and the lifeboat and crew have returned to station. The Irish Coast Guard Rescue 116 Dublin SAR helicopter based at Dublin Airport was also tasked but stood-down when the casualties were located.
Our Inshore lifeboat (ILB) was called out at midday today for two people on a 22-foot motorboat just outside Dun Laoghaire Harbour. The boat lost power close to the West Pier but were able to deploy their anchor to prevent them from running aground in the fresh northerly breeze. The ILB with three volunteer crew on board too the motorboat in an alongside tow clear of danger and back to their marina berth.

Universal Children’s Day is on Monday 20th November 2017! A range of agencies are organising exciting events on and around the day which can be accessed at www.childrensday.ie. The Katharine Howard Foundation has arranged two events with a focus on pregnancy and early childhood: Giving Our Children the Best Start in Life – an online survey for parents focusing on pregnancy and the first three years of life. The survey seeks to find out in all aspects of parents lives, what helps give their child the best start in life and what could be improved. The link to Survey Monkey is on the attached flyer. We would really appreciate if you could forward this survey on to anyone you know who is pregnant or is parenting young children. If you know of parents who may need some help in completing the survey, we would appreciate if you could offer this so that the results are reflective of parents from a wide range of backgrounds. Incy Wincy – A Play for Babies on Saturday 18th November - We are arranging a number of performances of this wonderful play for babies in The Lab on Foley Street. Full details and a link to Eventbrite for booking are on the attached flyer. We would also appreciate if you would circulate this to all parents of babies under 12 months that you know. We thank the Arts Office of Dublin City Council for hosting this event.
