Balbriggan Branch of Guide Dogs
Hello all, Sir Peter Cosgrove Governor General of Australia and his wife, Lady Lynne Cosgrove spent Saturday morning 23rd September 2017 with representatives from the Irish Men's Shed in Balbriggan The Men's Shed concept originated in Australia and according to Sir Peter, who is patron of the Australian Men's Shed movement, the growth of clubs across Ireland was vital to improve mental health standards in the country. "It's vital to identify that men, particularly in their middle years and onwards, can often find themselves searching for a sense of community and purpose," Sir Peter said. "This provides exactly to those needs and offers a sense of fellowship, involvement and the opportunity to produce things which are beautiful and useful". Tom O'Neill Guide Dog Owner and Co-Chair of the Balbriggan\North County Dublin branch of Irish Guide Dogs for the blind a while earlier had approached the local Men's Shed team with the idea of using the small model of a guide dog which appears on the top of all their charity boxes that can be seen all over North County Dublin in premises that are willing to have one. When you are reading this would you know premises that would take one anyplace? please do let us know. The counter boxes do get tatty, broken etc. so the local group recycle the model dogs and the Balbriggan Men's shed have found some beautiful donated wood and created several of the doggie plaques which tom got the opportunity to present one of them to Sir Peter and his wife Len at their visit to the Men's shed in balbriggan. Sir Peter asked Tom about his guide dog and what it means to him to have one. Never short of a word Tom told him "that the freedom and mobility he gets from his guide dog cannot be quantified in monitory terms and that nobody can put a price on freedom and to have the mobility to come and go as one choose when one is ready to go". Lady Lynne Cosgrove said "that she would call the model guide dog Gatsby after Tom's current guide dog" pictured with her and her husband. The 2 other pictures attached show Java the Hut with owner Mark Hynes in the hut at Balbriggan Train Station where one of the model dogs is on his counter top box. Also in the picture is Jade McCormack with Yanni her guide dog and Tom O'Neill with Gatsby his guide dog. The local branch of guide dogs will be selling their Christmas Cards and calendars plus a range of merchandise inside of Supervalu Balbriggan from 9 am to 8 pm on Friday and Saturday November 24th and 25th. Should you want to contact the local branch of guide dogs or volunteer with us send an email to email@example.com or text or ring 0857663107. Many thanks 🐾🐾

We are visiting a number of corporates in conjunction with World Sight Day and will be hoping to engage schools in fundraising activity with our 2017/2018 Education Pack. Everyone engaged in Fundraising (both staff and Volunteers) on behalf of Irish Guide Dogs should review these new guidelines and familiarise themselves with the new rules and guidance. The next steps for the Fundraising team is to review these guidelines and compare them to the policies, systems and processes that we have established, identify any gaps and plan when the gaps will be closed. In next month’s newsletter we will have an update on this. On first review the good news is that Irish Guide Dogs is very well aligned with the guidelines and for most of the gaps we have plans already in place to address these issues. As always feel free to talk to your Coordinator or the Volunteer Manager Una about any concerns you may have arising from this document from the regulator. If you would like to read the Guidelines you can read them here [ http://irishguidedogs.newsweaver.com/volnews/3f9gtjstkf1taydmy2v23j?email=true&a=5&p=1948589&t=809659 ]. http://irishguidedogs.newsweaver.com/volnews/1rmoh4j2isotaydmy2v23j?email=true&a=2&p=1948589&t=809659 ----------------------------------- Safe Cash Handling Policy We have just launched our new ‘Safe Cash Handling Policy’. This was one of a range of policies that Volunteers identified in the last year that needed to be created. The intention of the policy is to protect the organisation and the Volunteer and assure donors that money is being handled in accordance with best practice guidelines from regulatory authorities. You will be hearing this topic being discussed in the media in come weeks by the charity regulator so it is very timely that we are ahead of the curve in issuing this carefully developed policy. The first draft was created by the Fundraising/Volunteer Manager plus an external specialist with charity governance and finance expertise. The second draft was modified based on edits from the Volunteer Coordinators who are closest to the work, the third draft was created from edits from an external expert panel including volunteers with relevant qualifications and the final draft was created following edits from the relevant members of the senior management team and board. The standards laid out in this policy will not reasonably be implemented overnight. Volunteers and branches should work with their Coordinators to identify where their current practices are out of step with this policy and over the next few months we can work together to modify our practices to come in line with this policy which is best practice. We would like to thank all of the branch chairs who have welcomed the security that this policy brings to the organisation, donors and volunteers. http://irishguidedogs.newsweaver.com/volnews/3s4y1knm8fmtaydmy2v23j?email=true&a=2&p=1948589&t=809659 ----------------------------------- Car Raffle 2017 We’re fast approaching a busy period with the car raffle and will be in the following locations between now and December (Limerick, Louth, Dublin, Cork, Galway). For more detail on the events in these locations, contact Stephanie at: Stephanie@guidedogs.ie [ Stephanie@guidedogs.ie ] or if you would like to simply take a book of tickets and sell them between now and Christmas (10 tickets in book, €5 a ticket), it all counts towards making a significant difference in providing more of our services to the people that need them. http://irishguidedogs.newsweaver.com/volnews/mb7q01co2dttaydmy2v23j?email=true&a=2&p=1948589&t=809659 ----------------------------------- Volunteer Clothing! We can all feel the chill in the air and it’s time to wrap up warm. The good news is we have developed a range of clothing to keep Volunteers cosy and protected on those chilly streets while fundraising for Irish Guide Dogs. The range includes a polo shirt t-shirt, fleece jumper, waterproof warm overcoat, rain leggings, woolie hat and baseball cap. If you need any specific items please contact your Volunteer Coordinator who can order your items for you. To ensure we don’t incur too much cost to Irish Guide Dogs we have made the prices of these items available to any Volunteers who would like to make a donation in lieu of the cost. Coordinators also can cover the cost of these items for you. The range has been well tested by Volunteers across the country and looks smart and presentable while also being practical. You will be able to proudly sport your Irish Guide Dogs outfit both indoors and outdoors. As also have Volunteer Hi-Vis vests available for anyone who needs one. http://irishguidedogs.newsweaver.com/volnews/1x7ii8anha6taydmy2v23j?email=true&a=2&p=1948589&t=809659 ----------------------------------- Id Cards! As you know the Guards recommend that the public should not give money to anyone who cannot produce an ID card. We have official ID cards which are available from your Regional Volunteer Coordinator that identifies you as a registered Volunteer of Irish Guide Dogs. You and any local helpers you have should have one of these cards. All you need to do is send an ID photo to your Coordinator (by email or post) and we will produce and post the card to you. This card is especially important for people who are monitoring collection boxes. A few times a year we get calls from collection boxes premises where the staff member is checking on the credentials of the Volunteer. If you have had a card before and it is looking a bit worn feel free to get in touchtoo and we can make you a new one. http://irishguidedogs.newsweaver.com/volnews/w331ryes8hgtaydmy2v23j?email=true&a=2&p=1948589&t=809659 ----------------------------------- Newbridge Evening of Music!
